Is Acupuncture Right for My Pet?

If your pet is dealing with chronic pain, mobility issues, or a long-term health condition, acupuncture may offer a safe, effective way to improve their comfort and quality of life. Our experienced team at Windrose Animal Hospital is here to help determine whether this integrative therapy is right for your pet’s specific needs.

Acupuncture is often used alongside conventional treatments and can benefit pets with a wide range of conditions, including arthritis, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), kidney disease, and even seizure disorders. Dr. Acierno works closely with each patient and their owner to create a personalized care plan focused on relief, recovery, and overall wellness.

Acupuncture Techniques We Offer

At Windrose Animal Hospital, we offer several acupuncture techniques based on your pet’s condition and response to treatment:

  • Dry Needle Acupuncture – Traditional use of fine needles at specific points to stimulate healing.
  • Aqua-Acupuncture – Injection of fluid (such as saline or vitamin B12) into acupuncture points for extended stimulation.
  • Electroacupuncture – Application of gentle electrical current through needles to enhance therapeutic effects.
If you have questions about these techniques or whether acupuncture is right for your pet, our team is here to help. We can also recommend complementary therapies or refer you to one of our other locations if needed.

What to Expect During a Session

Each acupuncture session begins with a thorough physical evaluation and discussion of your pet’s medical history. Dr. Acierno then selects the most suitable technique and acupuncture points based on your pet’s symptoms and goals.

Most pets tolerate acupuncture very well—many even relax or fall asleep during treatment. Sessions typically last 20 to 30 minutes, and the number of treatments required will vary depending on the condition being treated.

Post-Treatment and Follow-Up

After treatment, some pets may seem sleepy or mildly energized. Others may show gradual improvements over several sessions. You’ll receive clear instructions on any aftercare needs, and our team will work with you to schedule follow-up visits and monitor progress.

At every stage of treatment, our goal is to support your pet’s comfort, mobility, and long-term health in a calm, compassionate environment.
